“This case here is about the why — the why matters,” Linker had argued to the jury. “This case is about whether David acted because of, on account of, Nancy Pelosi’s duties as a member of Congress. He didn’t, and he only struck Paul Pelosi in a quick moment of despair because the police arrived and his larger plan was thwarted.”CNN has reached out to Linker for comment. Around 780 people have been detained at the prison at Guantánamo Bay since it opened in January 2002. The podcast “Serial,” which debuted in 2014 with the story of a questionable murder conviction, has dedicated its new season to Guantánamo. Over nine episodes, it tells the story of the prison through a personal lens, by way of conversations with people who worked or were detained there. Desiree: There’s an interesting political story to be told about Guantánamo, but why did you decide to tell this story through the people who lived through it? Sarah: The government threw all of these normal people on Guantánamo, and they had to sort out how on earth are we supposed to behave in here, how are we supposed to make sense of this?

If you’ve listened to “Serial” before, you know that we’re interested in criminal justice stories. Our new season, which kicks off this week, is about Guantánamo — a justice system unlike any other. We tried to figure out how to do a story about Guantánamo for almost a decade. We had so many questions: What was it really like on the ground for the thousands of people who had passed through? If you have a question while listening to the show, you can send it to us using the form below.

Duffy, the Justice Department lawyer, tried to close the door on more divestitures. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration//File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Crypto lender Celsius Network may have to seek a new creditor vote on its proposed transformation into a bitcoin mining business, a U.S. bankruptcy judge said during a court hearing on Thursday. Celsius said last week that it had reduced its post-bankruptcy business plans to focus only on bitcoin mining, citing the skepticism of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) about its other planned business lines. The SEC did not definitively object to Celsius' bankruptcy plan before it was approved, but Celsius said the agency was unwilling to approve crypto lending and staking activity that the agency has opposed in the past. Celsius attorney Chris Koenig argued at Thursday's hearing that Celsius's court-approved bankruptcy plan gave the company flexibility to pivot to a mining-only business. Celsius creditors can expect a 67% recovery under the new plan, an increase from 61.2% under the Fahrenheit deal, according to court documents filed on Thursday.

The United Auto Workers union has once again escalated its strikes against big Detroit automakers, this time adding a factory that makes Ram pickup trucks for Stellantis. No progress was reported with Ford, which last week said it had the best offer of the three. The union went on strike Sept. 15 at one assembly plant from each company. By taking down the Stellantis factory, the union is signaling Ford and GM to improve their offers, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said. Each time the automakers make an offer, Fain said, they insist it’s the best they can do, only to return days later with a better offer.

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union says its two-week strike against Detroit automakers will spread to 7,000 more workers at a Ford plant in Chicago and a General Motors assembly factory near Lansing, Michigan. Union President Shawn Fain told workers on a video appearance Friday that negotiations haven’t broken down but Ford and GM have refused to make meaningful progress. The GM plant in Delta Township, near Lansing, makes large crossover SUVs such as the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave. The Chicago Ford plant makes the Ford Explorer and Explorer Police Interceptors, as well as the Lincoln Aviator SUV. Additional walkouts will take place at noon Friday without serious progress in contract talks, the union said. DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. said Monday that it's pausing construction of a $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan until it is confident it can run the factory competitively. The move comes as the company is in the midst of national contract talks with the United Auto Workers union, which wants to represent workers at battery factories and win them top wages. In February, Ford announced plans to build the plant in Marshall, Michigan, employing about 2,500 workers to make lower-cost batteries for a variety of new and existing vehicles. But Ford spokesman TR Reid confirmed Monday that plant construction has been paused and spending has been limited on it. Earlier this year Virginia dropped out of the race for the same Ford plant after Republican Gov.

CNN —Wartime Pope Pius XII knew details about the Nazi attempt to exterminate Jews in the Holocaust as early as 1942, according to a letter found in the Vatican archives that conflicts with the Holy See’s official position at the time that the information it had was vague and unverified. “The newness and importance of this document derives from a fact: now we have the certainty that the Catholic Church in Germany sent Pius XII exact and detailed news about the crimes that were being perpetrated against the Jews,” Coco told the newspaper, whose article was headlined: “Pius XII Knew”. His detractors say he lacked the courage to speak out on information he had despite pleas from Allied powers fighting Germany. The letter was among documents Coco said were kept in haphazard ways in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State and only recently handed over to the central archives where he works. DETROIT (AP) — aWith just over 24 hours left before a strike deadline, United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain says offers from the companies aren't enough and the union is getting ready to strike. We are preparing to strike these companies in a way they've never seen before.”The union is threatening to strike after contracts with companies that haven't reached an agreement by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. On Wednesday, Fain said the companies upped their wage offers, but he still called them inadequate. In a 2019 agreement the union got 6% pay raises over four years with lump sums in some years as well as profit sharing checks. All three companies’ offers on cost-of-living adjustments were deficient, he said, providing little or no protection against inflation, or annual lump sums that may workers won’t get.

A wide bowl brimmed with a mix of petite cherry tomatoes and oblong Romas. A tube of brick-red tomato paste lay half squeezed and waiting on a saucer. And standing at attention were a half-dozen glass bottles of passata, the uncooked, unadulterated tomato purée beloved across Italy. Nearly every pot that Guetta, 34, stirred on her stovetop in preparation for her family’s Shabbat dinner that evening simmered with something fragrant and red.

BERLIN, June 16 (Reuters) - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and a technology partner have mastered a battery manufacturing process called dry coating which if scaled up could cut the cost of cell production by hundreds of millions of euros a year, its battery chief said on Friday. "No-one else can do this today," battery chief Thomas Schmall said at a media roundtable. Dry-coating eliminates that step with an adhesive that does not require drying, Schmall explained. Together with scaled-up production and cheaper raw materials, the carmaker hopes the procedure will help bring down cell costs by around 50%, Schmall said.
